This paper, which has a methodological character, seeks to present and exemplify to the qualitative researcher the term intertextuality as a concept and as a method that may offer a framework for the analysis and interpretation of short narratives or life stories. The paper presents the theoretical framework and demonstrates its application in qualitative research as well as in the reading and interpretation of life stories. Intertextuality as a central concept in the study of culture is particularly suitable for narrative qualitative research, which is based on the subjectivity of the narrator, the story, the listener/ researcher, and on the relative and indeterminate dimension of knowledge. However, the use of intertextuality as an interpretative method in the various types of qualitative research requires that the researcher possess awareness and abilities that the paper below presents. In the light of the methodological objective of the paper, we selected narratives that represent different types of intertextual linkage on different interpretative levels, on different levels of complexity, and on different levels of ideas. The intertextual reading that will be demonstrated is mindful of the combination of different types of cultural components in the narrative as a means of representing the world of the narrator; it is also mindful of the hint of a macro context in his story, of taking a stand, of style, of the overall organization of the narrative, of endowing the story with his own interpretation, and of the researcher-interpreter’s option to reread the narrative before him. The writing style of the paper also illustrates the intertextual approach it contains.
