Abstract

The writing of this article coincides with the increasing popularity of social networks, as well as with open applications that greatly increase the ability of each online user to make his personal information accessible. Online social networks are prime examples of these phenomena. These networks afford users free and almost unlimited access to information that can have tremendous potential for learning. However, the rationale underlying these networks and the relationships between the individual and the group that they exemplify states that they are considerably different from other, more familiar, teaching environments. This study grew out of a desire to examine an academic course conducted within the setting of a social network, in the hope that we might better understand how student teachers learn within a network, and how these networks can advance both learning and teaching. The study found that the students in the above-mentioned course – teachers studying for master’s degrees at a college of education – readily adapted to the social networking site and to the various tools it offered. The individual students developed into a learning community motivated to advance the use of personal and professional content. Three distinct learning profiles were identified among the participants: (1) those who used the site to examine professional issues experimentally; (2) those who used the site to advance the network as a professional learning community; and (3) those who used the site to advance various educational issues and to make friends. Most of the participants fitted only one of these three profiles, while a minority exhibited characteristics of either two or all three of them.
