Teacher Research: From Kurt Lewin to Self-study and
Collaborative Learning Communities

תקציר

This introductory chapter has several purposes: First, to tell the story of action research in education since the 1950s. It begins with the work of Kurt Lewin in promoting action research for the purpose of inducing organizational change, and its influence on the world of teaching and teacher education and development. It continues with the growth of the teacher research movement in the 1980s, encouraging teachers to inquire into school practices and seek a better understanding of these practices in order to change them. It explains the current self-study phase, in which by means of inquiry teachers search for manifestations of their own identity and values in their practice. It highlights the connection between teacher research and teacher professional development, while calling attention to the significance of collaborative inquiry in professional learning communities. Finally, based on this story, it discusses and critiques the articles included in this journal.
