המילה, הצירוף, הניב והמילון בעיון ובהוראה: הרהורים בעקבות מילונים והצעות לשינויים

The article reviews the Comprehensive Ariel Dictionary that was edited by Daniel Sivan and myself (Sivan & Fruchtman, 2007). It raises deliberations and questions with regard to comprehensive dictionaries and their contents, namely, the possibility of precision, and the desirable level of the scientific precision of words from the fields of zoology, botany, and the other sciences in a dictionary of this ilk, which is intended for all Hebrew speakers. By means of exemplification, the topic of synonyms and its importance as the key to writing entries is discussed, as is the issue of the choice and placement of collocations and idioms within the dictionary entries. The article also demonstrates the importance of listing collocations that are trapped in the body of the dictionary, as stand-alone entries, and not simply as examples that supplement the components of the collocation. It is particularly important to ask these questions and highlight the answers in order to ensure that the way of teaching which is linked to the words and expressions of the Hebrew language, with all of its strata, can materialize in the most effective manner, thereby helping to enrich our pupils’ vocabulary and expressions.
