Teachers' professional identity and the evalutation field in Israel: do teacher training colleges stand a chance?

Abstract

Evaluation is everywhere and has been since the dawn of humanity. A teacher's professional world abounds with evaluation, and it is notable that the ways in which teachers evaluate their pupils have not changed much, despite the enormous changes and developments in educational evaluation and its increasing proliferation throughout the education system. These developments have not reached the teachers, nor do teachers have any ability to influence the manner in which evaluation is conducted in their own classrooms or in their own work. The training that teachers receive in evaluation and measurement is minimal both in its scope and in its standards. If, as is claimed, professional identity is created during professional training, evaluation is not part of this identity. In Bourdieu's terms, professional training and professional identity can be understood as the internalization of tools, a sense of belonging to 'a field', and the acquisition of the relevant capital for success in this field. According to Bourdieu, teachers possess cultural capital, and this capital defines their professional identity. While evaluation is undoubtedly professional knowledge, the field of evaluation is also highly political, and power plays a major role in it. Even though teachers and their pupils are among the main evaluation subjects, they are not part of this professional field; evaluation and measurement skills are not part of their profession, and are therefore not part of their professional identity. The teacher education system in Israel does not perceive evaluation and measurement as part of a teacher's profession or identity, nor does it provide them with the relevant tools.
