The Contribution of Explicit Discussion on the Connection Between Judaism and Science to Promoting Tolerance in Religious and Secular Students: Action research

Abstract

The present study examined how explicitly discussing the tension between religion and science in an academic course contributed to our teaching of the subject of evolution: What challenges did it arouse? How did it contribute to our professional development as lecturers? Jewish students from diverse religious backgrounds participated in the interpretive study, and data were collected from diverse sources. The findings indicate that incorporating an explicit discussion helped to dispel students׳ resistance to the theory of evolution, and increased the willingness of some students to incorporate the subject in their teaching. However, it did not help all the students to accept this theory. Granting legitimacy for articulating their difficulties with studying evolution, and exposing them to diverse outlooks in Judaism in this regard, was appreciated by the students, and contributed to their willingness to respect their peers׳ views that contradict their own outlooks. Incorporating an explicit discussion broadened our perspective regarding the complexity of the religion-science conflict, increased our openness to diverse views on the subject, and reinforced our understanding of the importance of explicitly discussing them in a culturally diverse setting. The resistance that remained among the religious students taught us about the potency of the religion-science conflict, and our limited ability to resolve it. The study findings demonstrate how teacher educators can adapt their teaching of evolution by acknowledging their students ׳ cultural differences, and show how a controversial scientific subject can become an opportunity to educate for tolerance of others׳ views.
