Teaching is a practical art, and teachers are artists of deliberation who are required to make decisions on myriad issues at any given moment of their work in the classroom. Accordingly, not only should teachers be granted far more autonomy in their classrooms, but their involvement in decision-making processes concerning educational policies should be facilitated. The first part of this article presents the educational teachings of educational philosopher Joseph Schwab as formulated in a series of articles titled "The Practical". The second part tracks Schwab's philosophical influences and focuses on approaches that support the cancelation of the dualistic separation between matter and mind, as well as on an analysis of human subjectivity and the learning processes that occur as a result of a combination of action and knowledge. The third part examines the implications of Schwab's insights as regards the status of the teacher and teacher education.
