The teacher's essence comprises two significant principles: the professional principle and the personal principle. The first relates to the "objective" expressions of the teacher's role (his/her professional skills), while the second relates to its "subjective" expressions (his/her personal qualities). The mutual existence of the two components in the figure of the teacher turns out to be complex and occasionally even contradictory. The article seeks to explain the nature and expressions of this complexity and to reveal the tendencies in the process of its formation. Good teacher education, according to the article, must exhibit awareness (1) of the complexity of the "teaching profession" and (2) of the existence of the tension among its components. It must recognize that good teachers adopt good strategies that are compatible with their unique personal characteristics and with their special pedagogical skills.
