Abstract

From its founding in September 1921, Ein Harod played a key role in the kibbutz Movement, and specifically within the United Kibbutz Movement. Its founders were people of various skills – intellectuals, writers and artists. The women of Ein Harod possessed a revolutionary-socialist-feminist consciousness and contributed greatly to the position of women kibbutz members in the society. This article presents their educational activities in the kibbutz, such as setting up collective childcare, as well as their efforts toward the establishment of the state. Their contribution to the design and development of the educational system, formation of curricula, and development of pedagogic theory all significantly impacted the kibbutz movement and the entire Yishuv. The educators paved their path, ex nihilo, relying on no prior tradition. Their main theory was that through love of children and faith in the enterprise would enable them to provide the children with excellent education. They saw their work as a kibbutz, movement, national, socialist and feminist mission, and devoted all their time and energies to its development. They studied and engaged in ongoing professional development, while writing and lecturing on pedagogic and educational subjects. Their initiatives and achievements demonstrate that they contributed significantly to shaping influential educational patterns, which have not been revealed in a focused manner in prior research on the kibbutz and education.
