המאמר סוקר את דמותה של שושנה פרסיץ (1892-1969) והיבטים בעבודתה בשטח החינוך. שושנה פרסיץ לבית זלטופולסקי הייתה פעילה ברשת החינוך "תרבות", יזמית-מייסדת של הוצאת ספרי הילדים והנוער "אמנות", חברת מועצת העיר תל אביב בתקופת המנדט, חברת כנסת (מהכנסת הראשונה עד לכנסת השלישית) מטעם סיעת הציונים הכלליים, יושבת ראש ועדת החינוך של הכנסת ופעילה חברתית וציבורית. על פועלה בתחום החינוך קיבלה את פרס ישראל בחינוך לשנת תשכ"ח. המאמר מתחקה אחַר פועלה ומשרטט דיוקן של אישה ששקדה, לא בלי מאבקים, על עיצוב דמותו של החינוך בשנותיה הראשונות של המדינה בשתי זירות עיקריות: החינוך הממלכתי וההשכלה הגבוהה. כמו כן המאמר עוסק בפועלה בתקופות מוקדמות יותר של חייה בגולה ובארץ ישראל; בין השאר הוא דן במעגלים החברתיים שפרסיץ פעלה בתוכם בגולה וכללו אישים דוגמת ח"נ ביאליק, ש"י עגנון וגרשום שוקן. נוסף על כך הוא סוקר את השתייכותה לחוגים האזרחיים בתקופת היישוב ובתקופת המדינה, וזאת כחלק מפעילותה במפלגת הציונים הכלליים שהציעה חלופה רעיונית למפא"י. המאמר מבוסס על מקורות ארכיוניים ועל ריאיון עם נכדתה של פרסיץ, רחלי אידלמן. הוא משלב בין תובנות מתחום ההיסטוריה של המשפט להסברים מתחום חקר המגדר כדי לעמוד על מקומן של נשים בצמתים תרבותיים משמעותיים בתקופות פורמטיביות – במקרה הנדוֹן, התקופה של בניין האומה.
The article reviews the life and work of Shoshana Persitz (1892-1969; Kiev, the Russian Empire-Israel), a social and public activist who helped shape the education system in Israel. Among the many roles she played, Persitz (née Rosalia Gillelovna Zlatopolsky) was a member of the Tarbut (״ Culture ״) education network and a founder-entrepreneur of the children's books publishing house Omanut ("Art), founded in 1917. She served on the Tel Aviv City Council during the British Mandate of Palestine and, after Israeli statehood, was a member of the first to third Knesset, representing the General Zionists Party. In 1968 she was awarded the Israel Prize for her achievements in the field of education. The article traces her work and sketches the portrait of a woman who toiled and struggled to promote and shape the first Israeli laws to establish state primary education and higher education, during a period of massive immigration and the turmoil of Israel's early statehood. The article also discusses Persitz's social circles in Israel and overseas, which included the likes of Bialik, Agnon, and Schocken. The article is based on archival sources and an interview with Persitz's granddaughter, Racheli Edelman. Incorporating insights from the fields of legal history and gender studies, it explores the role women can play in major cultural junctions during formative times, in this case – a time of nation building.
