Abstract

This article discusses Sara Shner-Neshamit (1913-2008) and her unique contribution to Holocaust education and commemoration in Israel. Shner- Neshamit's vocation as an educator dates back to her college days in prewar Lithuania. During WWII, she joined the partisan forces and was active in the education of child survivors of the Holocaust and their immigration to Mandatory Palestine. Her educational mission continued throughout her life in Israel as a dominant figure in the Ghetto Fighters' House Museum. Alongside her research and public writings, her main contribution to Holocaust teaching was as a pioneer writer of Holocaust literature for children and adolescents, predominantly as the author of The Children of Mapu Street (1958), one of the earliest fictional attempts to make this subject accessible to young readers. The article situates the novel against the background of its author's biography, the challenge of mediating this difficult subject to children, especially in Israel, and the historical and ideological context in which it was written and published. It is argued that the novel reflects Shner-Neshamit's character as a fighter, an educator, a scholar and an author, as well as the public discourse in the nascent Jewish state.
