Academic writing in the college of education: How students and lecturers perceive the writing tasks, requisite skills, teaching means and difficulties triggered by various types of writing

Abstract

The research described in this article examined the perceptions of student teachers and lecturers at a college of education with regard to academic writing. Questionnaires were administered to both students and lecturers in order to examine their stances regarding several topics: types of tasks, frequency and contribution to the students' literacy; the use of a range of teaching means; the common types of writing; and the difficulty triggered by each of the types of writing. The research revealed that the most common type of writing, which is also the one with which the students experience the least difficulty, is pedagogical writing, which includes reflection and a lesson summary. The least common type of writing is investigative writing, which is perceived as important by students and lecturers alike; the students, however, consider it to be a less convenient option. The students' feeling of self-efficacy vis-à-vis possessing the requisite skills for rewriting and editing strategies is higher, according to both lecturers and students, than their feeling of self-efficacy vis-à-vis possessing the requisite skills for planning strategies. A discrepancy was found between the lecturers' and the students' perceptions regarding what actually occurred in the lessons and the matter of the writing difficulties.
