Abstract

Creative thinking is one of the skills required in the 21st century. It is a process of producing novel and effective ideas that enable a person to cope with and adapt to rapid changes. One of the factors that motivates educators to promote this skill is their perception of creative thinking. The purpose of this study is to map the perceptions of pre-service kindergarten teachers (PKT) toward creative thinking, with the assumption that their educational endeavor is an outcome of their perceptions. The 138 PKTs from a variety of colleges in Israel answered an online questionnaire that assessed their personal and professional perceptions of creative thinking, and their ability to solve challenges creatively. The findings indicate that PKTs have preliminary knowledge about creative thinking, but there is a gap between this knowledge and their professional and applied knowledge. The results are encouraging, as the PKTs perceive creativity as a skill that can be achieved and advanced both in PKTs and the children themselves. The PKTs understand the importance of developing creative thinking and are interested in enhancing this skill. Based on these findings, we propose a processive model, which will form the infrastructure through which creative thinking can be developed as part of PKT education training.
