Abstract

Every society throughout history ought to ask itself about its fundamental values, the principal values to which it aspires, and what its teachers are doing in order to instill these values. Every society ought to ask about source of these basic values, the legitimacy of their authority, and the range of their application, as well as who is supposed to teach them, in what manner, and for what reason. In this article, I examine the Jewish approach to learning, to reading, and to writing starting from the beginning of the Common Era and even beforehand. I describe not only the diverse and multifaceted expressions of learning and education in accordance with this approach, but also the changing image of teachers in the various periods. Out of a range of sources and writings, I describe the millennia of Jewish scholarship based on a broad worldview whose foundations, which extend from ancient times to the modern era, are documented widely and in great detail in the annals and history books of all the Jewish communities that held the names of their teachers, rabbis, and writers in high esteem, as well as in the fruits of learning that are preserved in hundreds of thousands of separate volumes and numerous manuscripts. History has witnessed the "changing of the guard" more than once in these fields, and it can be pointed out that the Jews everywhere excelled in their studies and in the various disciplines they elected to study.
