Abstract

This article presents the important contribution of Helga Keller and Dorit Ballin, the pioneers of film and media studies in Israeli schools. When Keller (the visionary) and Ballin (the superintendent) began their cooperation with the Ministry of Education in 1992, there were film study classes in eight Israeli high schools – a number that skyrocketed to 319 by 2019. The article is based on a review of the literature, the researcher's field experience, an analysis of grey literature – curricula, professional supervisor's notices, students' films, and an interview with Dorit Ballin. Data analysis was informed by a five-level practicable model developed by the author to identify activist pedagogical orientation. The analysis indicates that the discipline as led by the two pioneers may be reconceptualized as activist pedagogy. The activist pedagogy approach supports the acquisition of 21st-century skills, contributes to active citizenship, and promotes progressive, liberal, democratic, and activist education. This article calls to adopt these educational pioneers' critical activist heritage, which is sorely lacking and at the same time necessary in today's society.
