Personal career anchors and the choice of a Master's program in education

Abstract

The current quantitative study focuses on the relationship between the pursuit of a Master's degree in education and personal career choices among students enrolled in four schools of education. The study population included students of administration and management of education systems and students in other disciplines in education. The study is based on Schein's theory (1977), which defined personal career orientation as "career anchors". Findings indicated significant differences in three career anchors between the students in the program for administration and management and those enrolled in the other programs. In addition, the career anchor differences were found to be related to gender and to the extent of prior teaching experience. The study did not find significant differences between participants' intrinsic or extrinsic motivations for choosing a career. The content analysis of the open-ended questions explained the differences between students in the administration and management program and those enrolled in other programs. It is possible that the former may be developing a professional managerial identity rather than a teacher's professional identity.
