Factors affecting teachers' attitudes toward help seeking or help avoidance in coping with behavioral problems

Abstract

This study sought to identify teachers' motives for seeking help in coping with behavioral problems in their classrooms, or, conversely, for avoiding such help. An attitude questionnaire of 120 statements on a four-point Likert scale was distributed to 329 school teachers from 26 public elementary schools in Jerusalem and its suburbs. An analysis of the findings revealed two types of attitudes toward both help seeking and help avoidance. The two types of help seeking are (a) a way of acquiring general capabilities and tools for coping with behavioral problems, and (b) the desire to obtain a quick solution to a specific problem. The two types of help avoidance are (a) the desire to cope with the problem independently, and (b) fear of failure. The analysis of the findings also revealed the motives underlying these attitudes in accordance with existing theories, namely, Motivational goals, Implicit theory, and Self efficacy. In addition, the personal and organizational factors that predict the reported frequency of help seeking were also identified. This finding may assist school support systems in matching various types of help to different teachers' profiles in coping with behavioral problems in their classrooms.
