Identifying students' perceptions of various areas of learning as a possible instrument in teacher education

Abstract

The goal of this nine-year study was to examine the perceptions of learning held by student teachers who are being trained to teach Jewish Studies in public 'non-religious secondary schools. The research examines the student teachers perceptions regarding learning content, learning skills, and learning behavioral norms. The study covers the four years of training as well as the graduates' first five years in the field. The patterns were placed on a continuum progressing from ".deep" (active) learning to "surface" (passive) learning The findings of this research indicate that most of the participants hold ,diverse, and even contradictory, perceptions of learning content, learning skills and learning behavioral norms, while only a few of them hold one coherent perception of learning in each of the above-mentioned areas. The findings further indicate that most of the participants hold a perception of learning that requires involvement in at least one of the areas studied (content, skills, or behavioral norms). It is therefore recommended that teacher education programs assist the students in identifying and characterizing their perception of "deep" learning and investigating how they may expand the perception of learning that requires .involvement in additional areas
