Kant and Foucault on the boundaries of teacher autonomy

Abstract

The article deals with the question of the boundaries of teacher autonomy versus governmental and institutional authority. It adopts a semi-philosophical approach in the discussion of the topic, while referring also to a recent concrete event as a test case. The article presents the views of two outstanding modern thinkers on the topic, Immanuel Kant and Michel Foucault, with particular reference to two essays which they wrote similarly titled "What is Enlightenment?" The article describes the points of dispute and concurrence between the two thinkers on the topic, and tries to imagine what position they would take in the public controversy that recently erupted due to the firing of a teacher who expressed (in his civics class) views contrary to those held by the educational authorities in his school. As an afterthought the article may help to vindicate the feasibility of using a philosophical lens to discuss present day concrete educational events.
