Using stories to support learning of mathematics
among low-achieving students: A comparison
between visual and textual mediators

תקציר

The goal of the program "Lehavin Plus" is to assist students at risk of underachievement in mathematics in primary schools. It fosters the understanding of the meaning of the concepts studied through the use of contextual stories using language and situations from the students' world. In this work, we examined the option of changing the medium by which stories were presented from texts to video clips. This change was suggested in response to teachers' reports about students' difficulties in remembering the stories when presented in textual form. Analysis of the interaction during a guided activity revealed that none of the students spontaneously mentioned the story; however, the students in the group that was introduced to the story via video were able to transform their discourse from a procedural-oriented discourse to one about the mathematical meaning. In contrast, the group that studied with text experienced a smaller degree of transformation in their discourse.
